Recurring water leaks can leave you wondering whether another repair is worth the money—or whether it is time to replace your home’s water lines.

Before making that decision, you probably want to know: How much will a whole-house repipe cost?

The price depends on the number of plumbing connections, the home’s layout, access for new piping, and the work included in the installation. A single-story home with accessible attic space is a different project from a two-story home with difficult access.

Here is what to understand before comparing your options.

What Is a Whole-House Repipe?

A whole-house water repipe replaces the hot and cold water supply piping covered by the project’s scope.

These lines deliver water to fixtures such as sinks, showers, toilets, and washing machines.

A water supply repipe does not mean replacing your drain or sewer pipes. It also does not automatically include new toilets, faucets, or a new water heater. Your proposal should identify which connections and equipment are included.

What Affects the Cost of Repiping a House?

1. Bathrooms and plumbing connections

More bathrooms generally mean more connections and installation work. However, bathroom count alone does not describe the entire project.

A home may also have a laundry room, outdoor kitchen, extra hose bibs, or other water connections. Two homes with the same number of bathrooms can have different plumbing needs.

A clear quote should explain which fixtures and connections are covered.

2. Attic or crawlspace access

The available route for new water lines affects the work involved.

Accessible attic or crawlspace areas can provide routes between different parts of the house. Tight spaces, limited access, and obstacles can make installation more involved.

Aqua Vita’s standard repipe approach requires suitable attic or crawlspace access. Homes without that access need an individual review to determine an appropriate installation plan.

3. One story versus multiple stories

A two-story home may require additional work to reach upstairs fixtures and route piping between floors.

The location of the bathrooms matters, too. Fixtures grouped together can present a different installation from fixtures spread across the home.

4. Pipe material and installation scope

At Aqua Vita Plumbing, we use PEX piping for our residential repipe projects.

PEX is used in residential hot and cold water systems, including retrofit installations. Its flexibility can help installers route new piping through existing spaces. The actual route still needs to suit the home and the piping manufacturer’s installation requirements.

When comparing quotes, check more than the material name. Ask about the connections, shutoff valves, installation approach, and warranty terms.

5. Wall openings and finish work

This is one of the most important details to compare.

New water lines may need access openings near fixture connections or along the installation route. How many openings are needed depends on the house.

At Aqua Vita Plumbing, drywall sections can be put back to close access openings, but drywall mud, tape, texture matching, and painting are not included. The exact closure work should be documented in your proposal.

Closing an opening is different from restoring a wall to a finished, paint-ready condition. Budget separately for those finishing steps.

What Should Your Repipe Quote Include?

Before comparing prices, ask whether each proposal clearly addresses:

  • Which hot and cold water lines will be replaced.
  • Which fixtures and outside connections are included.
  • The new piping material and connection system.
  • New shutoff valves and the water service connection.
  • Permit and inspection responsibilities.
  • Access openings and drywall closure.
  • Excluded finish work.
  • The written warranty and its conditions.

Aqua Vita’s standard repipe packages include permits, new shutoff valves, and a new water service connection. Your proposal should define the connection point and any additional work specific to your property.

Does Repiping Mean Tearing Out All the Walls?

Not necessarily.

The goal is to route new piping through suitable accessible spaces and create openings where connections or routing require them.

However, it would be misleading to promise that every house can be repiped without wall openings. The amount of access needed depends on the layout, construction, and fixture locations.

Before work begins, ask where openings are expected and what condition those areas will be left in.

How Long Does a Repipe Take?

For Aqua Vita’s typical repipe projects, our planning estimates are:

  • One or two bathrooms: about one day.
  • Three bathrooms: about one to two days.
  • Four bathrooms: about two days.

These estimates refer to the plumbing installation. Difficult access, additional connections, inspection scheduling, and separate finish work can affect the overall project timeline.

Water service will need to be interrupted during parts of the work. Confirm the expected shutdown schedule before installation begins.

Should You Repair One Leak or Repipe the Whole House?

One isolated leak does not automatically mean your entire home needs new piping.

A targeted repair may make sense when the problem is limited to one location and the remaining system is in suitable condition.

Repiping becomes worth discussing when leaks recur in different areas, previous repairs keep adding up, or an assessment identifies broader problems with the existing piping.

The decision should be based on the condition of your system and the scope of the problem—not simply the age of the house.

Will Repiping Fix Low Water Pressure?

It may help if the problem comes from restrictions or defects in the water lines being replaced.

However, low pressure can also come from other causes, including the incoming water supply, valves, filtration equipment, or individual fixtures.

The cause should be identified before promising that a repipe will solve it.
